The Flag of the United States of America

Pledge Allegiance to the Flag

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The Flag of the United States of America represents all of us in America.  It represents the thousands of Americans who gave their life for the freedom that you and I enjoy and often take for granted.  It represents the great sacrifices that our fore-fathers have made for us.

Who among us can understand what it would be like to live in a situation where the government can summarily execute people that don't agree with the way the government is run!  The Flag represents our freedom to say that we don't like the way government works without fear of death!  That's something that a lot of people in other parts of the world can only dream of.

A lot of people just look at the Flag and don't think about how great they have it here.  Why do you suppose thousands of people are trying to cross our borders to get to the good ol' USA!  They understand the freedom that this country offers.  They understand that if they work for someone, they will be paid!  They will have protection from big business for poor working environments.  They understand that people can say almost anything without going to jail!

How many people in the U.S. are packing up and about to make a trek to another country because of the restrictive nature of this country?  Can you think of ANYONE?  I can't.

Someone asked me what my position is on Flag burning.  I think it should be obvious that I am comletely against burning the flag (disrespectfully)!  On the other hand, I don't think we should make a law against it.  It's something that people should respect, and if they don't, why are they still here!!  I'll tell you.  It's because, in the U.S.A., people have the FREEDOM to do what they want as long as it doesn't interfere with someone else's freedom.  That's not something many other countries offer.

Based on that last statement, you may ask, "What about drugs? Using drugs doesn't interfere with other citizens freedom."  Maybe, maybe not.  Do you think that driving home with your family when a drunk driver slams into your car, killing everyone inside your car, doesn't interfere with your freedom??  I think it does.  Most other drugs that have been made illegal, alter the mind more than alcohol.

I think that's about all I'll say for now.  If you have questions or comments on anything I've presented here, please e-mail me.  I would like to hear from as many people as possible :)

* - The words "under God" were not part of the original Pledge.  They were added in 1954, under the Eisenhower administration.  One reason may have been as an anti-communist message.  During the anti-communist era of the 1950's, people used the phrase "Godless-Communist".
