Kombatan Arnis is the art of Grandmaster Ernesto Presas. It utilizes all combinations of empty hand, stick and knife. For example, you can learn to use empty hand, single stick, double stick, knife, and stick and knife. A lot of people will also refer to these as mano mano (empty hand), solo baston (single stick), doble baston, dage (knife), and espade y daga (sword or stick and knife).
This is a very effective and complete art for self defense. You can learn the art that the Filipinos themselves use to defend themselves.
Modern Arnis is a compilation art from the Filipines. It encompasses a lot of different styles and ideas of training and fighting. Typically, one starts training with a stick and a knife, then translates that to empty hand.
Modern Arnis can be viewed as a hard or soft style depending on who you ask. There are many movements in the art that are soft, or deflect an opponent's energy. There are also some movements that are considered hard because they attempt to counter an opponents energy.
The word Arnis comes from the Spanish word "arnes" which means "harness of the hand" or "coat of mail".
Unarmed Combatives is the combination of practical street fighting concepts from a lot of different arts. Unarmed Combatives focuses mainly on unarmed defenses against an unarmed or armed attacker. W. Hock Hoccheim has evaluated many different arts and techniques and has tried to eliminate the useless and keep the useful. In doing so, he has created a set of techniques that give you a greater chance for survival.
"The Scientific Fighting Congress mission is to amass the best tactics in hand, stick, knife and gun combat as researched from a hybrid of military, police, martial systems and the aware citzenry regardless of style or affiliation." - Hock Hoccheim.
Knife Counter-Knife Combatives are a practical approach to edged weapons training. Most martial arts spend only a short time on knife fighting and strategy. Knife fighting involves not only learning how to attack with a knife but also learning how to defend empty-handed against a knife wielding attacker and therefore is invaluable even for those who don't necessarily want to learn how to use a knife. "Know your enemy."
